Potato gateau

When we decide to make potato gateau it’s always a party at our house.

Ingredients for 6 people:

  • 1 kg of potatoes
  • 100 gr of cooked ham
  • 250 gr mozzarella
  • 50 gr Parmesan cheese
  • Breadcrumbs
  • Extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt
  • For the béchamel sauce:
  • 20 gr butter
  • 1 tablespoon of sifted flour
  • 250 ml of milk
  • A pinch of salt

Wash the potatoes, put them to boil in a pot and meanwhile prepare the béchamel. Take a non-stick pan and melt the butter, as soon as it’s melted turn off the element and mix in the flour, stirring quickly to prevent lumps from forming. Turn the heat back on and pour in the milk while continuing to stir and add a pinch of salt. After about 10 minutes the béchamel will thicken, so take it off the heat and add the grated Parmesan cheese, the cooked ham and the mozzarella cut into cubes.

Let’s go back to our potatoes. As soon as they are cooked, peel and mash them. Put everything into a bowl, add the mixture of béchamel and mix everything with salt, if necessary.

Now take a nice big baking pan, brush the bottom with a bit of olive oil and then with breadcrumbs. Finally pour in the potato mixture and finish with another layer of breadcrumbs and a drizzle of olive oil. Bake in a pre-heated oven at 180°C for 40 mins.

Once ready, let it rest for about 10 minutes and serve. I assure you it will be a success! Of course, the gateau is one of those dishes you can enrich as you wish, so if you prefer a more decisive taste, add some salami and caciotta cheese, or vegetables. In short, leave way for your culinary imagination. 😁
